
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970, in Newark. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her acting and social-politics skills as well as her talent for rhyme. When she was 8 years old, her cousin from Islam named her Latifah which translates to "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah sang with the choir of the Shiloh Baptist church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first public performance , singing "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mom was a major influencer and she kept in touch with the children and music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also known as D.J., was invited to attend the event.
