
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine who was a laboratory technician, and John Ormond, a stockbroker. She is the second of five children for her parents. In the beginning, she was a student at Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her initial lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a single year of art college, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. She graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared on British television in the 1989 serial Traffik. This show focused on the illegal trade in heroin that was thriving from the Far East up to Europe. Ormond was the addicted daughter of the main character, who was a Home Office minister in the UK government fighting heroin importation. The role received a fawning reception at the outset.
